Do not lay any new sod or grass seed, it is a waste of money. When March rolls around and you do want to lay sod squares please remember to dig down into the soil and place the squares tightly and spread top-soil around each square. If you just laid down sod over existing soil or grass, by doing this you are throwing your money away.

We are still in the planting season for Shrubs, so if you have an idea of what you want you can successfully plant Shrubs.  Tips for Shrub selection:

1. What the selections Height and Spread will be after maturity.

 2. It is not suggested  to not plant any-thing right after it has rained.

For Trees: Established Trees 5 years or younger need yearly fertilizer. Older Trees need less fertilizer as does newly planted ones. I suggest you do a Deep-Root feeding in late Winter I.e.: March 1-15. You can mix Miracle-Gro in a bucket and tip it around the base of any Tree allowing it to soak in also. I also recommend fertilizer stakes that can be purchased at any Garden Center, one piece of advice doing the stakes is to pound in a spike on all four sides around the tree, lay a water hose next to the tree trunk and let it drip for an hour or two. Fertilizer spikes can be applied to Trees/Shrubs and Large Perennial Flowers, Palms included. You should repeat any deep root feeding once in every 2-3 year’s.

Pruning branches off of any Tree or older Shrub right now is permitted. Try and remember when doing so to protect any large cuts with either a Brown paint sealing the cut or buy a sealing compound. Reason for doing that is bugs can infest the cut and eat their way in leading to a potential disaster later.

Did You Know: We live in Zone 7b for the state of Texas. You can look at the tag on any Tree-Shrub or Flower and it should state what zone each of your selections are in.

Now is a good time to also start thinking of garden makeovers. Think about what you wish to plant what design the garden should show off. Rounding or curving gardens stands out from 90% of other homes. The key to success when working with any Landscape project is to make your property look unique standing out from others. It is very important to introduce different colors, for instance you can plant a nice Holly Bush as the backdrop of your garden adding in a Deep-Green color, placing a Texas Sage in front of that Holly adds in a Silver colored leaf, in front of that Sage plant a Barberry bush that bursts out with a Deep-Purple color. By thinking that way you can add in a unique look to your home. Curb appeal will sell your house twice as fast as any other. Keep that in mind when you decide to do a project.
